Hume & Hovell Cairn construction

The centennial of the journey by the explorers Hamilton Hume and
William Hovell from Yass (New South Wales) to Port Phillip Bay in
1824 was marked by the erection of a chain of cairns along the route.

Staghorn Flat took part in the project. Here local men are hard at work constructing a
cairn situated at the northern end of the Avenue of Honour. The cairn was unveiled
by a local schoolgirl, Jennie Street, on 18 November 1924.
